Matching the Repair to the Material
Modified bitumen and built-up (tar) roofs are typically repaired with heat-welded patches or a mastic-and-fabric system, feathered down at the edges so they don’t peel up later.
EPDM (rubber) seams are adhered, not welded — repairs use compatible seam tape or liquid-applied systems designed specifically for rubber. TPO and PVC are heat-welded single-ply membranes; repairs use the same heat-welding technique as the original installation for a genuinely bonded seam, not just an adhesive patch.
The Mixed-Material Problem
One of the most common issues we find on multi-patched roofs: someone layered an incompatible material over the existing roofing — EPDM over torch-down, for example — without proper transition detailing. It looks fixed for a while, then fails again at the same spot. Fixing this properly sometimes means removing the incompatible patch and redoing it correctly, not just patching over the patch.
