Flat Roof Drain Clogged With Debris — DIY Fix or Call a Pro?
Clearing visible debris from a drain is often a reasonable DIY task. Diagnosing why it keeps clogging is a different question.
If you can safely access the roof and see leaves or debris sitting on top of a drain, clearing it yourself is usually fine — that’s basic maintenance, not a repair. Do it regularly, especially before Berkeley’s rainy season each fall.
If a drain keeps clogging repeatedly, or clearing it doesn’t actually solve standing water nearby, that points to something more than debris — an undersized drain, a slope problem, or damage to the drain assembly itself. That’s worth a proper look.
Drain keeps clogging no matter what you do?
