Flat Roof Leak vs. Gutter Overflow: How to Tell the Difference
Water damage near the roofline isn’t always a roof leak — sometimes it’s drainage overflowing at the edge.
Overflowing gutters or a poorly draining roof edge can push water back under fascia boards or siding, mimicking the appearance of a roof leak without any actual failure in the roofing membrane itself. This is worth ruling out, since fixing the roof when the real issue is gutter capacity or a clog wastes effort.
A quick way to narrow it down: does the water damage track with heavy rain volume specifically, or does it happen even in lighter rain? Overflow issues tend to correlate more directly with rainfall intensity than a membrane defect does.
