What to Do the Moment You Spot a New Roof Leak

A short, practical checklist for the first hour after you notice water coming in.

Move anything valuable out from under the leak, and contain the water with a bucket or towels. If it’s safe and dry outside, note where on the roof the damage seems to be relative to the interior stain — that information helps whoever inspects it. Take photos of the interior damage now, while it’s fresh, for your own records.

Don’t go up on the roof during active rain to investigate — it’s not safe, and most repair work can’t be done properly on a wet surface anyway. Call once you’ve stabilized the immediate situation.

  • Contain the water and protect belongings
  • Photograph the damage for your records
  • Note timing — does it correlate with rain intensity?
  • Avoid going on the roof during active rain
